Do I Need a Shed Permit in Taylor or Marathon County?

This is the #1 question we get. The answer depends on where you live. The rules in the City of Medford are different from the Town of Medford. We've simplified it for you:

• In the CITY of Medford: Yes, a permit is required. Your shed must be 3 feet from your side/rear property line and 8 feet from your house.

• In the TOWN of Medford: Yes, a permit is required if the total value (including labor) is over $2,000. The Town follows Taylor County's 10-foot setback rule.

• In the VILLAGE of Spencer: No permit is needed if the shed is 150 sq. ft. or less. However, setbacks are much larger, often requiring a 30-foot rear setback.
